There’s something that I’ve been missing from the internet for a while now, and that’s the personal blogs of Web 1.0. You might remember the “under construction” gifs, the lack of a coherent theme. People weren’t in an active pursuit of clicks and clout.
Sure, seeing what you done gain a following would be a welcome thing. A nice little frisson of dopamine for the synapses. But I’m not going to bother with search engine optimization, advertising or trying to sell you something. This is critical. If you go on YouTube looking for information about setting up a blog, it’s all about maximizing views, AdSense revenues and SEO. I don’t have the patience or the inclination for that.
This is just a stream of consciousness writing and photography exercise.
I’m well into my forties and I’ve had it up to my eye teeth with algorithms, short form content and short attention spans. If that makes me a curmudgeon, sobeit I guess. I’m nerdy enough to buy a domain and set up this blog. I haven’t turned my back on online culture, but we’ve all seen what’s happened to Twitter and TikTok. Facebook is moribund. Instagram is thriving, but if it follows the patterns of everything else sooner or later it will reach an end.
I wish to give my attention to content that deserves it. If I’m motivated to write a short essay then this is the place to do it. If I travel, this is where I’ll talk about it. If I take any photos I want the public to see, this is where I’ll post them. I don’t think I’ve written poetry since I was an adolescent but yeah, I’ll inflict that on readers here too.
